Hi Susan,My understanding was always that Darius was Armenian by origin... but that might just have been a piece of Armenian propaganda...All the bestMarcus

Dear Susan and Marcus,I do not know the name of SpitamenesGÇÖ wife. As Marcus points out he could have been an Armenian. If you look at any ancient map you would find the name Arta-Sata in this region. The name is puzzling because it is the name of Darius-III in the Babylonian records. And I suspect Arta-Sata was also the name of Gomata/Gotama. DariusGÇÖ motherGÇÖs name Sisigambis is also puzzling. He may have been related to Sasigupta and this would place him near Seistan area. Gambu(dvipa) was once the name of greater India. One of the greatest Vedic scholars, the Late Prof. R.N. Dandekar, wrote that the RgVeda represents the religion of Bactria and this is very similar to Zoroastrianism before Zoroaster. During Darius-IGÇÖs time there were many Buddhists in this area who supported Gotama/Gomata though the Bactrian nobles sided with Darius-I. The Greeks were on the side of Gomata.Regards,Dr. Pal.
