Although I am keeping a separate 'mark book' ... :-)But I agree with you. Yes, it was not you who got the spelling wrong in the first place - and anyway, although I agree that we shouldn't be criticising that sort of thing, the person who spelled it "that way" in the first place was aware that it was wrong, and acknowledged ignorance of the correct spelling. But that wasn't the point, anyway.ATBMarcus

Well, now Linda Ann, I am an English teacher and just a creature of habit, so I appreciate your comments. And I do see now that you mentioned it that you do have those little marks there to show that you were quoting from someone else...thanks for telling me as I appreciate it upfront. I am surprised that anyone found my post as I thought it was buried, but I was just teasing about you...and so appreciative of Marcus. I finally did see your one word answer to that previous post, so again, thanks and hopefully you do not despise me so much any longer...I make mistakes too!

Hi Marcus, Old habits die hard. Because I am aware of how many students actually use posts from the internet, I am hypersensitive to this kind of thing, and often deliberately use typos, poor spelling, and other devices to make certain that anyone who just prints a great response must also correct it. That was my job for years, and spelling is one of my specialties, as is typing. But I was just attempting to tease Linda Ann who I have never found to be anything but professional and perfect. Your post just earned respect from me about your comment about a famous era in history, as the misspelling was driving me crazy, and that is why I commented. I had no idea that this would upset anyone or even that anyone would read it at this end of so many posts. Sorry about that. Again, I often make mistakes and sometimes will edit my posts, but usually let them go. Again, if someone is hitching a ride on my thoughts, they can do the work of cleaning them up.

Yes Efstathios, I did in fact mean ancient propaganda. And yes, the view you have of the Achaemenid Empire and Persians is very much the view that has come down to us fron the Greek sources.Herodotus wrote for a Greek audience, hence it suited him to portray the Persian army drinking rivers dry and numbering in the (totally implausible) millions. It suited to portray the Empire as vast (which it was) and unassailable. It makes the Greek victory look that much better. Leonidas and his seven odd thousand holding an army of one and a half million at bay for three days reads that much better than holding some 120,00 - 150,000 (though that in itself is feat enough). It also suited to describe (as Greeks constantly did) the Persians as degenerate, uncultured, effeminate and barbaric. The description of Xerxes' bed maker (and the fact he actually slept on what we would call a mattress) as making him "soft and degenerate" says more about the Greeks' lack of sophistication than it does the Persians for instance. What I am saying is that you need to be rather carefull of accepting a description of a culture that ruled an empire for some two hundred years that comes from only one source (as in Greek not specific texts) and a hostile "bigoted" source with its own agenda at that.

Despise you? Hardly, Jan, so let me explain. Although you believed I would not take offense, I have to say that on reading your initial post I felt extremely embarrassed at being admonished in this public manner - at both the beginning and end of your message, no less. When I realized that in defending myself it became necessary to "point the finger of blame" for the error towards someone else, I knew I would never want any other member of this forum to feel as uncomfortable as I did, hence my response. It's done now, so let's think no more on it. :-) Best regards, Amyntoros

Linda Ann, If I admonish you for anything at all, it is that you do not realize that I was giving you the highest and deepest of compliments. I respect and value your comments and observations very much.
:-)Let's call this a day!
