Renault was writing fiction so she probably just rephrased something else he was known to have said. There are various quotes similar that I've read. That's a particularly good one!

He was convinced to be invincible, so he never spared his life or energy for "tomorrow". Also, this phrase sounds like some of those numerous "how to live a happy and fulfilled life" advices. As far as I know, every modern philosophy in that regard dates from the ancient times ... more precisely from the ancient Sanskrit. Well, if Bagoas really said that... that would have been some "newly" learned ancient wisdom (bearing in mind how fascinated Atg was with Persian culture, tradition, religion.... etc).Cheers,
