Anyone got any idea of how long it would take to travel from Pella to Aigai, with horses and litters, accompanied by some baggage and hunting hounds?

Thanks Andrew. It would be roughly 50 kms. Aigai is in the mountains but the area around Pella is fairly low if they hugged the coast and then went inland. I'll have to recheck on a better map than the one I'm looking at this moment. Actually I'd imagine they'd cross-country rather than go to the coast first.

This would be a small party: The Regent Polyperchon w/his escort,(bodyguards, squires etc) accompanying Roxana, her small son and household from Pella to the old palace at Aigai. (for the sake of my historical fiction novel for which I try very hard to get facts and details straight). Help/advice much appreciated.

Hi Andrew,I don't know whether it was just a typing error, but it did look as if it had affected your timing calculation - 50 km is not approx. 80 miles. It's the other way round. So your 5-6 days is *way* off, surely - more likely a little over a day if the distance is actually around 30 miles. CheersMarcus

Question: Would it have been likely in those troublesome times, even in Macedonia, for Polyperchon to have been travelling with only a small party of bodyguards and squires? I would have thought a small *army* more likely, especially when transporting the last of Alexander's line.
And were there actually "Squires"? Wasn't that the function of the pages or is that what you meant?Just early morning pre-caffeine-intake curiosity. :-)Best regards,Amyntoros

Linda, this is just before the real big troubles happen. Polyperchon is taking them to Aigia where he feels they will be safer because he has to go south for a meeting with Phokion. I believe there would have been a garrison near Aigai as it was the secondary royal palace. Yes, by 'squires' I mean the young cadets and other retainers. Naturally the royal family has their special bodyguards as well.

I'm glad you knew how to convert to nautical miles - I wouldn't have had a clue ... but it's very useful to know!CheersMarcus
