Alexander a Hero?

Alexander the great is considered a hero for an obvious reason; military victories. But there is more to it than that. Was it because of his unification of the East, or the spread of Hellenism?

I suppose it depends on who you ask. I don't think the Persians thought of him as a 'hero' and he certainly had enemies among his own ranks of Macedonians. However, I think the fact he tried to unify the countries and spread Hellenism makes him a big 'hero' in the Greek's eyes. And to me, he IS "my hero".

Hi!
Even for some part of persians and people from India he was a hero because he didn't made them a slaves as Aristotele taught him. Instead of this he left them their positions (removing only when it was many complains for them). This is only general conclusion because his administration in Asia was more complicated. Maciek

Yes, he is a hero for many Greeks. Alexander is the forerunner and executrix of the "koine" Greek language of the New Testament, therefore, spiritually, Alexander is revered as the "language herald" of the language for Christianity. Alexander is a hero, though with vices as any hero had (i.e Herakles), he accomlished an ecumenical gathering of cultures and languages that created a global transmigration, fusing economies, literatures and spiritualities! Yep, he's the hero of antiquity in my heart .

What he achieved was amazing. He was an ingenious tactician, altough he did make a couple of mistakes along the way (Granicus, disbanding of the Athenian fleet). Sources also say he was extremely adept in combat and there is no doubt that he was a very inspiring leader.

Hi Ruxpin!
I agree that he made few mistakes but don't agree that disbending of the fleet was his mistake. This step was very risky but it was genius strategy:
1- The winter was close so during the winter they didn't proceed the sea operations, so he would pay large amount of money (which he didn't have) for nothing.
2- If Persinas would meet Greecs in the battle (as Parmenio suggested) athenians had small chance to win (140 athenian ships - 400 persian - mainly the Phoenicians) - it was the way to weeken the athenian supremacy in the see which he didn't use. Reason in my opinion - was that he wanted to fullfil all Corinthian League tasks and keep greek city - states in good condition - he wanted fair rules in the league.
3- And tyhe most importand - he wanted to beat persian fleet from the mainland. About this point I could write few pages to highlite pluses and minuses of this strategy but main conclusion - is that it was great strategy - it causes some trubles and not all his plans was realised but generally he did it - beated the persian fleet from the land. When Phoenician ships came to his side persian fleet desapired.Maciek
