Greetings,

This is just a quick question: can anyone give an example of the Yagnobi language (which is supposed to be directly descended from the Sogdian) *and*, does anyone here know at which time it would have begun branching off from the original Sogdian?

According to The Circle of Ancient Iranian Studies GÇ£As late as the 17th century the Sogdian language, of which the Yaghnabi language is a continuation, was widely spoken in the Zeravshan and Kashkadarya valleys, in Usrushan (an area between Samarkand and Hodzhent) and in the Fergana valley. After that Sogdian gradually retreated under pressure from the Tadzhik languages.GÇ¥

I found the article from a Wikipedia link and the Yaghnobi language page has a (very) short example of the language plus a couple of other links at the bottom.

This is all new to me, but quite interesting.
