I have argues and still maintain no Roman Army or Commander would at any period beaten Alexander on the batytle field or Scope of Conquest.

But having Read Octavian Augustis Caesar Im pretty sure there was one clever astute politicain that would have pulled the rugg. When we think of commanders kings generals etc we focus on there vistories tactics etc... But I doubt Alexander even Philip were as bloody clever and Coniving as Augustus.

I dont think he would have initially met Alexander in battle but Im sure hed have played ever trick in the book of a chess game to make sure he had Alexander exactly where he wants him and had bribed twisted every avenue open to Alexander.

Apart from Augustus sexualo deviancies I think he was the master politician and spin master of the Ancient world with of course a prettyu useful arme systen to use.

You might have a point as far as the politicking is concerned, Kenny. What is beyond doubt, however, is that Octavian was not a general - he would have had to leave it to Agrippa to direct any battle ... and whether Agrippa would have been up to the task is a different question.

As regards Octavian's "sexual deviances" - don't pin all your hopes on what they said in Rome being the case. I don't recall that there's any mention of his having any ... er ... requirements in Seutonius (who, believe me, would have mentioned them if there were any!). The point to which a bit of spanking constitutes a "deviancy" is perhaps for another forum?

Your spot opn with Augustas as primarily a politician and very good generals.... As you say would Agripa etc facw Alexander. Well if they did I would bank Alexander taking them.

However we go back to the other genius of Octavian... I doubt wether he would allow or contemplate Agrippa or his generals taking the field.... Untill or unless he had played out all his other cards. Diplomacy. Trade Offs stalling etc all the things coniving politicians do up until the time they are very confident of takking there enemies out.

Of course we know Alexander was also astute he was his fathers son... But to out fox Octavian who knows.

I believe Octavian would operate a political Scorched earth policy.. Adopt even A Scipio tactic... I do believe he would eventually pull Alexanders rugg... But in in no doubt imediate head on encounter andAgrippa and his boys would be out of a job.
