As promised to Marcus some months ago, I am pleased to let Pothosians know that the next phase of my reconstruction of the History Concerning Alexander by Cleitarchus of Alexandria (the main source of the Vulgate tradition) has just been published and is becoming available through online bookshops, such as the various Amazon sites, Barnes & Noble, abebooks... The title is Alexander the Great in Afghanistan and it presents the three books of Cleitarchus (books 7, 8 & 9) that cover the events between the death of Darius and Alexander’s invasion of India. Together with the previously published volumes entitled Alexander the Great in India and The Death of Alexander the Great, the new book completes the reconstruction of all of the Cleitarchus’ work after the death of Darius.

This new volume describes the following main events:

Book 7: July 330BC – June 329BCThe Advance to Hecatompylus; Description of Hyrcania and the Caspian Sea; Surrender of Artabazus & the Greek Mercenaries; Theft of Bucephalus; Surrender of Nabarzanes; Visit of the Amazon Queen; Adoption of Persian Dress; Revolt of Satibarzanes; The Philotas Affair; Assassination of Parmenion; The Euergetae; First Crossing of the Paropamisus Range
Book 8: July 329BC – Autumn 328BCAlexander’s Advance to the River Oxus; Bessus Betrayed to Alexander; The Fate of the Branchidae; Alexander Wounded near Maracanda; The Revolt of Spitamenes; Alexander’s Advance to the River Tanais; Annihilation of a Macedonian Column by Spitamenes and Alexander’s Counterattacks; Capture of the Rock of Ariamazes
Book 9: Autumn 328BC – May 327BCThe Hunt in Basista; The Killing of Cleitus; The Treaty with Sisimithres; The Decapitation of Spitamenes; The Proskynesis Experiment; The Conspiracy of the Pages; The Army Caught in a Blizzard; The Marriage to Roxane

In addition to the reconstructed text, the book proposes an exact date for Alexander’s accession. Precise dates for Alexander’s birth and death and for his greatest battle have long been known, but until now nobody has been able to determine the day on which his father was assassinated and he ascended the throne of Macedon. Now new evidence has emerged from my project to reconstruct Cleitarchus, which shows that Alexander’s reign began precisely on the Autumnal Equinox in 336BC. This is detailed in the 8th section of this new volume.

The cover image is based on one of the engravings entitled The Principal Deeds of Alexander drawn by Antonio Tempesta in 1608. There is also a press release for the new book at http://www.prweb.com/releases/2011/7/prweb8632049.htm.

Best regards,

Andrew
