Hello,After reading the posts regarding Alexander's appearance and the discussion about which portraits/coins/mosaics were closer to a "true likeness", I was wondering why the Aboukir medallion was chosen. To me it seemed idealized and, in fact, very similar to other portraits of Alexander on coins. Thanks in advance for your input,Max

Are we talking about the same Aboukir medallion ? The one I'm referring to, can be found at:http://www.angelfire.com/il/AlexanderTh ... Coin.GIFIn it, Alexander's face is lined and his forehead furrowed. It looks like the face of a man who has fought hard for several years. That's why it's important.Susan

Thanks for that clarification! The Aboukir medallion I was refering to is the one at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon (Inv. no. 2428), which does look "idealized".
Sorry about the confusion.Max
