One of the best fictional portrayals of Hephaestion is in Aubrey Menen’s ‘A Conspiracy of Women.’ The sardonic favorite companion of ATG gets the best lines in the book. In order to go beyond the seeming chauvinism of its main theme and enjoy it, one needs to contextualize the book and the author’s sense of satire in providing social commentary. Thanks for the reminder about this book. It is a little difficult to get hold of a copy, and the postage costs from the US to the UK are astronomical, but I did manage to get a copy from the UK.
