Too much booze and your dead
Hi Folks I was reading some posts and some of the texts, and the theories of a drink induced illness.I wonder how prevelent this was within the ancient Macedonian culture, who fought hard played hard and drank hard.I would like to explore the theory Alexande died through over indulgence, I think it really laughable, im sure that the macedonians were sell use4d to excess, drinking and through the text I couldnr find a lot of evedince that Alexander was a heavy drinker at all,ane even if he were it was really the norm and am sure the man been only 32 could drink a lot without dropping.Richard Burton, who played Alexander was a prevelent actor who really did drink, and drank much more potent alcoholic drinks, lasted into his 60s and alcoholism gernerally takes decades to erode someone and finish them.I think it utter bull that Alexander got a fatl fever following a night on the booze,if so I reckon the mortallity of ancient Macedonians would have been low and no male should have expected to live past 40.regardskenny

Kenny,
It appears you might have missed my point when I quoted Aristobulus telling us Alexander took a draught of wine, upon which he fell into delirium (temporary mental disturbance:a state marked by extreme restlessness, confusion, and sometimes hallucinations, caused by fever, poisoning, or brain injury). Who knows, who cares, obviously you do. Personally I don't think it's important, the reason for Alexander's death, compared to what more he would have accomplished.
Believe me, I've had good friends that were in decent physical condition, I mean they could work as hard as anyone else and still kicked the bucket at a early age due to their over indulgent of whatever. Hell, Alexander could died of Rift Valley fever that's carried by thirty different mosquitoes. Who knows, who cares, I guess we all do except to a certain extent and that level differs in all of us.The life of humans is a life as a tree, some grow to ten to fifteen ft. tall look healthy and for no apparent reason they die compared to others that go on living for centuries. Like Susan said: When it's your time the reaper cares not.
Regards,
Andrew

Re: Too much booze and your dead
A very valid point, Andrew. Yes, Kenny's right that Richard Burton lasted into his 60s, but plenty of other people die of alcohol poisoning in their 30s. Plus, Richard Burton hadn't had his lung punctured by a Mallian arrow, and received loads of other wounds with all could have contributed to a general downturn in his resiliance and immune system. However, I don't think that anyone has ever suggested that the drink itself killed him.The fact is that, whether he was poisoned or bitten by a mosquito or any other nasty little bug, he was probably more susceptible to it than we think. All the bestMarcus

And unfortunately, as we know from Aristobulos, he continued to drink when he was ill and it made him wildly delirious. Needless to say, this did not help matters and leads to some interesting speculation...
