Alexander & Islam
There are some Islamic scholars who believe that Alexander may have been a prophet of Islam. However, the information presented is vague. Are there any noteworthy books or articals on this topic?
Re: Alexander & Islam
You can read more about Alexander as DhulQarnain in the article on Alexander & Religion on Pothos itself:http://www.pothos.org/alexander.asp?par ... %20KoranAs Dhulqarnian, Alexander is often portrayed as companion to Al-Khidr, the Green Man. See http://khidr.org/
Incidentally, Al-Khidr ( or Khizr) is apparently the Islamic patron saint of cannabis !Susan

Re: Alexander & Islam
Prophet means 'fore-runner' - so an Islamic prophet would come before Mohammed; similarly in the Old Testament - the prophets all make prophecies about the future. Susan

Re: Alexander & Islam
Dear Ruth -Almost every important personality that figures in the Christian bible is also considered a prophet in Islam. This is true for Abraham (Ibrahim), Moses (Musa) and so on and on and thus also for Jesus (Isa) who is considered in Islam the second highest ranking prophet after Mohammed. Islam recognizes all these prophets, but considers Mohammed the one that reveiled the ultimate message by reciting ("Quran" means "Recital") the words of God (Allah) Himself. Many greetings -Nick

http://www.understanding-islam.com/rq/q-028.htm1) Cyrus is a personality mentioned in the Bible, i.e the Old Testament (the Book of Daniel, the Book of Ezra and some other books where Cyrus is referred to in very explicit terms: Daniel dreamt that in the palace of Susa in Elam, a two-horned ram triumphed over all animals, with the exception of a one-horned goat that finally defeated the ram. Daniel lost consciousness after this dream and an angel appeared to him, saying that the ram he had seen was the king of the Medes and the Persians, while the one-horned goat was the king of the Greeks) (Book of Daniel, chapter 8, verses 20-21).
4) In the Qur'an, Dhulqarnain is described as someone to whom God granted power and authority on earth. This corresponds well with the personality of Cyrus, who conquered a large part of Europe and Asia, establishing the first empire in the world.
5) The Qur'an's Dhulqarnain was God-revering and a monotheist, and so was Cyrus. As the most probable date for the appearance of Zoroaster is in the mid-sixth century B.C., this date is close to the time Cyrus lived.
6) Dhulqarnain led a military expedition to the land west of the sun. This is consistent with the Achaemenian king's military thrusts in Lydia in Asia Minor and his conquest of that country.
7) Dhulqarnain led a military expedition to the land east of the sun, corresponding to Cyrus's expedition to the southeast (Makran and Sistani) and northeast (near Balkh).
The Qur'an's Dhulqarnain encountered a barbarian tribe and this is consistent with Cyrus's expedition to the north and his battles with the Sakas, who may be interpreted as the barbarian tribes of the Ya'jooj and Ma'jooj. Here, Cyrus defeated the barbarians and in the Daryal Pass, which was the only passage from which they could be attacked by their neighbors, he built a barrier made of copper and iron. The people under siege might have asked Cyrus for help and provided him with manpower.

Re: Alexander & Islam
I don't need to read it because I know it by heart.Surat 18. Al-Kahf (the Cave)83.And they ask you about Cyrus the Great. Say: "I shall recite to you something of his story."
84.Verily, We established him in the earth, and We gave him the means of everything.
85.So he followed a way.
86.Until, when he reached the setting place of the sun, he found it setting in a spring of black muddy water (Lydia). And he found near it a people. We (All+óh) said (by inspiration): "O Cyrus! Either you punish them, or treat them with kindness."
87.He said: "As for him (a disbeliever in the Oneness of All+óh) who does wrong, we shall punish him; and then he will be brought back unto his Lord; Who will punish him with a terrible torment (Hell).
88."But as for him who believes (in All+óh's Oneness) and works righteousness, he shall have the best reward, (Paradise), and we (Cyrus) shall speak unto him mild words (as instructions)."
89.Then he followed another way,
90.Until, when he came to the rising place of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We (All+óh) had provided no shelter against the sun.
91.So (it was)! And We knew all about him (Cyrus).
92.Then he followed (another) way,
93.Until, when he reached between two mountains, he found, before (near) them (those two mountains), a people who scarcely understood a word.
94.They said: "O Cyrus! Verily! Ya'j++j and Ma'j++j (Gog and Magog) are doing great mischief in the land. Shall we then pay you a tribute in order that you might erect a barrier between us and them?"
95.He said: "That (wealth, authority and power) in which my Lord had established me is better (than your tribute). So help me with strength (of men), I will erect between you and them a barrier.
96."Give me pieces (blocks) of iron," then, when he had filled up the gap between the two mountain-cliffs, he said: "Blow," till when he had made it (red as) fire, he said: "Bring me molten copper to pour over it."
97.So they [Ya'j++j and Ma'j++j (Gog and Magog)] were made powerless to scale it or dig through it.
98.(Cyrus) said: "This is a mercy from my Lord, but when the Promise of my Lord comes, He shall level it down to the ground. And the Promise of my Lord is ever true."
99.And on that Day [i.e. the Day Ya'j++j and Ma'j++j (Gog and Magog) will come out], We shall leave them to surge like waves on one another, and the Trumpet will be blown, and We shall collect them all together.
100.And on that Day We shall present Hell to the disbelievers,

Re: Alexander & Islam
they associate alexander the great as having 2 horns as well. After he died Egypt associated him with the god Amon and he appeared on all their coind with horns (in the god's style), that may have something to do with it.
