Interesting review. Guess it will be no threat to the movie on Ray Charles, Ray, for Oscars. I always suspected that if it bears any resemblance to Virtues of War, it will be panned! Thanks for the review.

I have read two other reviews which say the same thing, that Stone rushed it, and that it is Much Ado About Nothing. Going to be a very bad movie according to Ain't It Cool! Colin Farrell won't be in consideration, and neither will the movie if these reviews are correct! Guess Johnny Depp may have clear sailing...(for the oscar treatment)!And I thought I read that Stone loved Alexander.

It might turn out to be a cult film..remeber when John Wayne played Gengis Khan.?Maybe it will be like Conan the Barbarian, which was panned, but now has ome cult status. I love it.

Actually, I am feeling very bad about the reviews. But the comparison to Natural Born Killers in one of the reviews made me know that this is a movie that will probably make me angry for wasting six bucks on it. (I am a senior so I get a discount).!

I think you are taking this a bit hard, Jan. There have been no reviews done by the professional critics, as of yet. These amateur critics that post for sites like AICN, tend to ramble on, give no details and generally give no useful information about a film. AICN has been accused of writing fake reviews in the past (I am not saying these people have not seen the film, here).I am sure the reviews on this film will be a mixed bag, anyway. Not everyone is going to like it. Critics are not usually too kind to "ancient" epics. We won't know how well Stone did or didn't do until we see it and make that judgement for ourselves.I believe, from what I have heard is that he has told the story in a very different format than what American audiences are used to. It also looks like he took some chances with the film and he doesn't spoon feed the audience. Some people have trouble with that. This is what I have read, as well. Let's give it a chance and see how true he actually is to the story of Alexander. Don't let some of these reviews get you down. There not worth much more than the paper they are written on (IMO).Thats just my 2 cents, for what it is worth.Dara

Hear hear!Jan,Jeannette Walls is no doubt, and believe when I say many people do agree, is one of the dumbest individuals to ever take hold of a pen, her picture says it all; A one hundred and five pound head (solid bone) on top of a seventy five pound body.With the sound track aside, you need to make your own decision and not let someone else create a negative influence for you. You need to take the bull by the horns, and when the time is right, make your own decision.

I wouldn't believe anything these reviewers say. I'd bet they don't even know the history. Looking forward to opening night. (Still a bit worried about Colin Farrell's voice though!) ruthaki

Here is one of the early critics review from The Latino Review. Apparently they like the film and give it 3 stars. Also, Empire Magazine in the UK had a good review, as well (4 Stars). Thanks for the review, Dara, and I agree with everyone who believes we have to decide for ourselves. And reviews are intended to incite, provoke, and stimulate interest so I suppose that may work.
I just read an article in Entertainment Weekly which discusses the perils of making the movie, and all of Oliver's fears about whether it will be accepted or rejected. Very interesting article, as supposedly, Stone has put it all on the line.
The cover is of the major stars all in a row too.
My point is that battles which are only clashes are not really character studies, but noise, blood, and lots of dead bodies; whereas, had he shown a really good piece of writing in developing the character of Alexander as in the battle of Tyre which demonstrates perserverance, determination, hardworking Macedonians never giving up, and finding victory after really tremendous adversity, the movie would have been a great one! But to just choose to use only battle scenes in which the better team kills the most men is just simply a bit too cheap for me. I would have liked to have seen the real true character of Alexander as an inspirational figure who leads his men to defeat the worst of odds. But so it goes...that film may yet get written, directed, and produced yet. (After all the BBC who made Cambridge Spies which is a really great piece of work surely knows that there are people who can make it happen.) I am crossing my fingers that the really great movie will still be filmed in my lifetime! But I am confident too that the Stone movie will be spectacular!
