Stone Correct With Going with Gaugamela

Post by iskander_32 »

Companions It been argued and cdorrectly so that Stone bypassed Issus in preference to Gaugamela.I accept all Alexanders battles wporthy of showing however I feel Gaugamela demonstrates more of Alexanders genius. With Gaugamela Darius had everything in his favour he even chose the site of battle to suite his much larger forces than Issus offered,,, Basicaly Darius at Issus was pinned between the sea and the mountaind with no roomfor manouver. At Gaugamela Darius had all he needed and i think it fair to say even the most avid wargamers could recreate Alexanders victory at Gaugamela,,, The sheere numbers open range and varied weapons im sure Alexander could be handled better than Darius did,,, It only demonstreted Alexanders genius and understanding he had for his craft,, Im sure no other commander in history could replicate Gaugamela.Breifly a columnist in the UK writing about the Alexander movie labels Alexander as.The Infamous gay Greek ruler. Its good that we know better.Kenny

Hi Kenny,I agree with your comments on Gaugamela. I do find Issus more interesting myself, but Gaugamela was the final battle against Darius, and the largest, so it makes sense to show it rather than Issus or Granicus. All the bestMarcus

issus is my favorite battle hands down. but in my opinion stone was right to include gaugamela instead of issus because this is the battle that broke the organized resistance of the persian empire.

I'll have to see the movie first to know if it was better or not, but it seems tied in to Steven Pressfield's and History Channel's attempt to show only the Battle of Gaugemela. I believe the three are co-ordinated.

Hi FolksdEven though Issus was a great victory, I doubt that Darius even took it at all seriously. He turns up with his hundreds of thousands of buddies,, He takes his family along for the ride feeling confident the Macedonians would be easy.Once behind Alexander cutting him off Darius, must have thought christmas came early.I am sure Darius at Issus underestimated the Macedonian, I mean you turn up with 200 000 of your mates see this little Macedonian army and think its an early bath and back to the wifes tent for cakes and nookie.Darius on the other hand had to be prepared and more focused at Gaugamela he knew he had a real apponent and had to use anmd fight the best way he could. In my view Gaugamella was the hammer blow that smashed Persia.Granicus was the warm up Issus was the Semi and Gaugameala the knock out.Hydaspes was a large battle but a new phase, also a battle of atrician mind games betwwen 2 great generals,, Different weapons and terrains and even a turning point.Hydaspes show Alexander would make a good poker player with his bluffs and counter bluffs.
