Re: New Tomb Discovered In Greece
I was hopeing someone can tell me if there are any websites that discuss the language of any inscriptions found on this tomb. This would aid me in my research. While I am asking, Peter Green in his book (which is the number one book on this websites "Christ Mass list" says that Herodotus claims that at first Alexander the First was not admitted to the Olympic games, and later got in by "fabricating" his decent. What historical proof does Green have for this? In his footnotes, he lists a book, and Herodotus, but the book is not something I own or something I have heard. I am looking for a historical source (like that of Herodotus for example. Does Herodotus also admit at first he was declined for not being greek? I can look this up online though.) But I need proof that gives the truth of this claim, unless of course it is false. Then I need the historical refutation. Can someone send me documented proof of the truth of un-truth of Green's claim?I understand that internet forums get heated, etc. I also understand that many say "dumb" things for attention or whatever. What I ask is for others to be polite, and not make assumptions, I have in no way made up my mind on this topic, and I am still researching, not on an agenda to prove anything political in the modern sense since I don't know even what I beleive. If I am indeed in folly, correct me politely, as oppossed to bashing me, and give me the proof. Not to mention, more often than not Arrian, Plutarch, and Diodorus at least imply (putting it lightly) Macedonains were distinct, so at least understand my confusion and where it comes from. My grandparents, were forced out of Germany by the Bolshevics. But then, where they lived in Eastern Germany it was modern day poland. Poland got bigger after WWI, and thus, while my grandparents (now deceased) would say they were German citizens, where they lived is Poland today. I can care less about boundry changes overtime. I am looking for ANCIENT history, not about modern map lines...Please give me the benefit of the doubt, and help me politely in my confusion. Peter Green is making this claim on the Olympics, and I am trying to understand if this is everyone's favorite, why they disagree with him. Thanks

Does Herodotus also admit at first he was declined for not being greek? Herodotus firmly inclues the Macedonians as part of the original Greek stock while the Athenians were Hellenized Non Greek pelasgians.
His inquiries pointed out to him two states as pre-eminent above the rest. These were the Lacedaemonians and the Athenians, the former of Doric the latter of Ionic blood. And indeed these two nations had held from very early times the most distinguished place in Greece, the one being a Pelasgic the other a Hellenic people, and the one having never quitted its original seats, while the other had been excessively migratory; for during the reign of Deucalion, Phthiotis was the country in which the Hellenes dwelt, but under Dorus, the son of Hellen, they moved to the tract at the base of Ossa and Olympus, which is called Histiaeotis; forced to retire from that region by the Cadmeians,[1] they settled, under the name of Macedni, in the chain of Pindus. Hence they once more removed and came to Dryopis; and from Dryopis having entered the Peloponnese in this way, they became known as Dorians. The Olympic incident comes later in the Histories. I do not beleived your confused you have a agenda thats why you contantly bring up this issue and only use isolated quotes.

To be polite, you are assuming...which is impolite. Before I argue with you though, I will wear garlic from neck and sleep with cross. FYI-for 10 years I was a Rabbi, and I am 34 years old. Now, I am an accountant. I went straight to Rabbinical school. Why am I not a Rabbi now? Because after studying the archaeological info, and seeing the facts in Israel, I realized I was teaching lies for a living, and stepped down. WHile I have been persecuted as a Jew, I am open minded, and I can admit that maybe we Jews do have some blame for the holocaust. The first recorded genocide that we have written evidence for in human history is the book of Joshua in the Hebrew bible. It is Jewish monotheists who spread monotheism, and spread a holy land must- follow our god type concept that gave rise to xianity, then islam, and terrorism, genecides, crusades (in all monotheistic religions), and all sorts of evil, and it began with Jewish writers fabricating a mythological genocide in the book of Joshua in the name of a one "true" god. When I stepped down from being a rabbi, I could use a type writer, but I never learned to use a computer, email, nor did I have job skills (like you get job skills at a seminary), yet I was married with three kids. I struggled to survive until I got my CPA at night school, and now I make great money. The point of this is, if I can step down from my only source of income due to the facts, that shows I am an open minded individual and a truth seeker. Your arrogance and misjudgement of my intentions is causing me to look elsewhere than this forum to research history, instead of help, I get people too impassioned and too immature to look past modern politics and into the past to not even be able to have a discussion. (While I have never researched the forbidden topic, I sure am going to now. Curious why everyone is so pissed off.) Sure, I admit, my new found religious truth has affected my position of the Palestinian Israeli conflict. But I am mature enough to see through an issue of modern politics to be able to discuss the ancients, it is you guys that can't separate the ancient history from modern history. Of course I am not arguing Alexander the Great or Macedonians are slavs, that is ridiculous. I am sure I may indeed laugh after my research is done. But, really; discussing truth with Alexander fans is like discussing the historical Jesus with xians. Doesn't work...So long forum...

PS-If you guys can't admit that there are ancient quotes from the "big 5" that at times seem to confuse the identity of Maceonians, or mention them as distinct from Greeks, it seems that you can't admit any truth about anything, and if you can't do that, are not good scholars, and not just about Alexander, but about any history...bye

Hello Bob,
First of all, please accept my apologies for ANYBODY that may have pissed you off. Your posts are welcomed and interesting, so pleeeease continue unabated in your inquiries. There is some strange racial tension regarding Alexander's decent that appears, at least from a Heinz 57 American's viewpoint, to be ridiculous. I'd also like to congratulate you on having such an open mind. The life change that you have gone through must have been horrendous, and it takes a strong individual to take the steps to freedom. You seek the truth, and this forum, I think, provides it. So please, keep posting. Unfortunately, I can't answer your question about Green's statement that Alexander I fabricated some Hellene pedigree. Though I'm well aware of that bit, and most everything in Green's book, I'm also painfully aware that he does use quirky off the beaten trail historical tidbits to open entirely new lines of supposition...in most cases to prove a point. We love Green, not because of his historical accuracy, but because he is so interesting and, maybe even more so, because he writes with such a lyrical flare. Green's book should be enjoyed more so than scrutinized. If you really want rote historical accuracy, then I'd suggest A.B. Bosworth instead. Better yet, read them both and judge for yourself. I'm sure Paralus is going to let me have it for that, but he knows "Green means more to us than anything". later Nicator

Re: New Tomb Discovered In Greece
G'day Nicator. You're a bad boy. How dare you suggest historical inaccuracies!? Generally the boy admits to such errors (as with the Granicus). If you've not read it, read "Alexander to Actium". More history there than you can poke a stick at. Accurate to boot!As to you Bob, I wonder at the constant questioning with respect the Macedonian/Greek thing. My view is that the Macedones in ancient times were considered different. I agree with Green, Badian and others that the "Argive descent" was a fiction GÇô and one not readily believed in ancient times. Indeed it was brought into question.I was re-reading Hammond's "Philip of Macedon" whilst waiting on my car (which was being serviced) and there are some peculiar paragraphs with respect to how the Greeks perceive Macedon. I shall endeavor to find it over lunch and relay it. Something to do with the illiteracy of Macedonian Queens (Eurydice being one) who felt it enough to learn only Greek (the implication being, of course, not Macedonian).Paralus.
