dear Friends Once again thanks for your great posts. can you help me with another point, What was the real story of the persian envoys that included memnon, menapis and the satrap of artabazus.
Did they really have a meeting with Alexander when he was 7.
was he so intrested in Persai from such a young age and that he asked memnon specific questions that left their marks on Memnon.
I am very intrested in your insightsAmir

Re: Memnon
Hi Amir,Again, we cannot be entirely sure whether the story is true. There appears to be little doubt that they came to Macedonia as exiles, but their meeting with Alexander reads very much like later propaganda, designed to demonstrate Alexander's thirst for knowledge and his precocity, and also possibly to provide an explanation for his knowledge of and affinity for the workings of the Persian empire. However, do not feel that you have to leave it out of your comic, even if it isn't true. It is one of the better known stories about Alexander and it's a jolly good little story. All the bestMarcus
Re: Memnon
I have to (once again-this is getting boring!) agree with Marcus. We really do not know if this is a fact of fiction but I tend to believe the second. However it's a nice story and it probably has some amount of truth in it. If I could draw a straight line I would definately paint this scene as part of Alex's childhood alond with the taming of Boukefalas!Regards,
Yiannis

Re: Memnon
Of course you agree with me, Yiannis, of course you do
(the money's in the post).I also agree with you, that the episode is a seminal one for showing what the young Alexander was like. In fact, because we have so little information about his youth this is probably exactly why the story was circulated. In fact, whether it is true or not could be argued to be immaterial. It reminds me of when I was being interviewed for my MA course. At the time they had discovered a piece of evidence that appeared to show that King Arthur was an actual historical person, and the interviewer asked me whether it was important. In truth, whether Arthur was a real person is immaterial from an academic point of view - that's what I said, anyway! All the bestMarcus

Re: Memnon
Well, he might have been. But the point is that it doesn't really make any difference...... not so of our dear Alexander, of course!Marcus
