Has anyone here ever attempted an actual symposium? Not just a somewhat "civilized" drinking party, but an actual event with a small amount of folks, getting together to discuss various topics. I have been kicking around the idea and there are many that are interested. Even a few of my history professors are open to it.
It would be modeled after the Greek symposium of course but the topics discussed would be current. I think it would be a blast. But also offer use a small window into the past, just to see what it was like.
What does everyone think about modern symposiums and their reaction in society?

A good idea, but rather limited as it would have to be exclusively male, no women guests were allowed at a Greek symposium. You'd need to have a large number of couches. If you follow the Macedonian example only those men who had killed could recline. Be careful if you play the game, kottabos, which was all the Greek rage; it's hell on light-colored carpets!

Until the hetairai come in, of course. I feel weak just thinking about it ...Leonidas wrote:A good idea, but rather limited as it would have to be exclusively male, no women guests were allowed at a Greek symposium.
