Post by geo »

Hi all, just was wondering how close is Erbil to all the fighting now going on in Iraq..that I believe is the modern name for Gaugamela right?
Twenty four centuries have past and we still fight there......rgards,

Hi George, We haven't seen you on here for some time.Erbil is actually Arbela, which was the nearest big town to Gaugamela, but still 70 miles away. Arbela is where Darius had his headquarters; after the battle Alexander raced through the night to get there, but by the time he arrived Darius had gone.It looks very green at present - not like the sandy parts of southern Iraq, doesn't it ?
