I thing not only to his men, very importand was for him his fame and glory! I think he wanted to be remembered as good king (as Aristotele tought him what is to be a good king) so he did everything to have a good opinion also in the diaries and all other works which Calistenees and others wrote during his trip. Thats why he wanted to clear himself from all accusiations. But this trip had other aims as well. He wanted to be in so old and famouse oracle maybe he a little believed in Goods voice speaking... Also he wanted as always be better then people before him - he knew about Xerxes's army which didn't succeed to reach this oracle. One other point was that he started to plan his idea of beeing known as god. In my opinion it was importand to him because it would make him easier to rule his empire as greeks could neal only before the gods. But that's the long story and I'm sure everyone here knows those facts and has his own opinion about it. So to summarise I think he had few aims in Siwa: 1. to cleare himself from accusiations of killing his father,
2. to reach the point which appeared impossible to reach for the persian commander,
3. to make the basics for naming him the god in the future (or maybe like Plutarch writs it crossed his mind by accidental mistake of one of oracles priests). Maciek

Yes, I agree with one thing that is obvious and that is that he always wanted to do better than anyone who had ever preceded him. That seems to be a running theme in his story, to break all existing records. Also, congratulations upon your upcoming wedding. I know that it is on another post, but I will include my best to you now on such an important venture. I still hope to look into your eyes someday. Hope your Polish wedding is full of happiness and good times for you and your bride. I wish you the very best.Jan
