"The Search For Alexander the Great" 1981 Miniseries
I've been searching for a copy of "The Search for Alexander the Great" a TV miniseries that was aired back in the early 80s. It starred Nicholas Clay. I discovered this site (pothos.org) while trying to find/reasearch this production and am really enjoying reading the posts and information here. ATG has always fascinated me and it looks like I'll learn a lot more after I make my way around this site. But in the interim, if anyone knows if copies of this production are available please pass along the information. Thank you!
wouldn't we all like to know!
A discussion on the whereabouts of this production was bandied about recently, and nobody seems able to locate a copy of it. What is the nature of your research, maybe we can help?Nicator

The nature of my research is simple - I saw this 20+ years ago and have a renewed interest in it on a personal level. Being new here, I didn't realize it was a topic of recent discussion, but it only makes sense. I was reading elsewhere that even Mr. Clay's family has been trying to get a copy of this production. If this is true, then we may never see it again! It's got to be somewhere, though, don't you think?

Hi Gayla --I started a thread about this very topic back in July and unfortunately had no luck. The miniseries seems to have had a video release by Time-Life Video probably not long after it was shown, but has been out of print for years and years and doesn't seem to have been rerun anywhere since then. I did locate via Google what appeared to be library database listings for tapes of all four episodes, along with prices for copies ($150-$200 PER EPISODE) but haven't as yet been able to determine exactly *which* library the listings were for. Someone did suggest contacting the producers as well as the other actors who appeared...but like you, I read the post by the rep for Nicholas Clay's family at IMDb, and I figure if even they are unable to squeeze copies out of people associated with the production and are forced to seek them on message boards, I probably wouldn't have much luck, but maybe I'm just being defeatist. Another possible avenue to explore would be a video search service such as A Million and One World-Wide Videos, but I have avoided this thus far because I know people who have used such services and they can get quite pricey (which is also why I haven't further researched the library thing). It's my hope that just maybe, in what is sure to be a glut of Alexander-related programming surrounding the release of the upcoming films, some channel will dredge it up again. If I ever do locate it, I will not fail to post about it here. I envy people like you who have at least gotten to see it once!:-)

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply, Rebecca. I just know it's out there somewhere. I too will post any information I receive if I find that it makes an appearance. I remember so little about the series when I saw it, but I do remember that it made quite an impression on me. Thanks again.

Nicolas Clay as Alexander? Growl! That I would like to see! He was gorgeous in Excalibur...Keep me in the loop for that one!GA
