Another Movie
Recently in the New York Post there was information concerning teh director of "Moulin Rouge" (I don't remember his name) who is interested in producing a movie on ATG, competing with the other two started production this autumn and early winter. Colin Farrel has been chosen for the starring role in one of the movies. Somehow, I want to get a rumor started out in media land that Erik Stolz should portray ATG. He has the *melting eyes and red-gold hair* and the high-voice described by Plutarch. I think he or Joaquin Pheonix would be the best choices, for known actors; or, an unknown blond, blue eyed youth actor. Opinions, anyone .
Re: Another Movie
I wonder if we will actually see any of those movies. I rather thought Colin Farrell could play Hephaestion, but that is just me.Baz Luhrmann made Moulin Rouge - I would love to see him do an Alexander - it would be incredibly camp, but amazing visually. Imagine the wedding at Susa (one of my time travel times, I think). However, I thought Moulin ROuge was boring rubbish; maybe he wouldn't be so good at creating a story.
Re: Another Movie
If Joaquin Phoenix is the Emperor from Gladiator then YES! - a good choice, or perhaps an unknown, with no baggage.

Chris,"Or perhaps an unknown, with no baggage"Calling to mind the episode when Alexander had all the baggage burned, no doubt? But more seriously, I agree with you - it would be best if we didn't have a 'star' playing Alexander. All the bestMarcus
Re: Another Movie
yes, it is he. I think- a very good chioce... Only if... But I still hope- someone will make this movie!
Re: Another Movie
Colin Farrel? as Hep, I agree with Linda on this one, and Matt Damon or Brad Pitt as Alex...preferably Pitt, only he has the charisma to carry this role off...later Nicator
Re: Another Movie
The worst idea I ever heard was that that anglo saxon looking young yuppy Eric Stolz to play Alexander. By the way we all know ATG was'nt blond.
Please have the kindness to everyone's intelligence to read before speaking.

Re: Another Movie
Actually the only ancient written descriptions of him that mention his hair color say he was blond. All of his portraits in Macedon that have been found - the lion hunt mosaic and the stag hunt mosiac, and the boy in the middle of the tomb painting in Vergina, all show blond or red blond (gold)hair. The only portraits that show him with brown hair are not surprisingly, Roman, but even then the hair is light with a blondish streak. The Alexander Sarcophagus when first unearthed showed 'reddish' paint still remaining on Alexander's hair. I might add there were a lot of blonds in Macedon - in the mosaics, those shown with Alexander are also blond. It was not a rare hair color.I wouldn't be in such a hurry to make comments on intelligence next time-it can have a nasty boomerang effect.
Re: Another Movie
I think we've been through the Alexander hair colour question several times already on the forum, and the general consensus has been that his hair was more of an old-gold or tawny - certainly not Scandinavian blond. Despite the total lack of evidence I still think that there was Celtic blood somewhere in him, probably from Olympias. I don't know if there are any grounds for Olympias being portrayed as a dark redhead, but this is how I always imagine her.
Re: Another Movie
I think it was brown or dark brown bordering on red with highlight streaks. I hate to waste my time with such minutia, but I had to defend Alexiou; ATG wasn't blonde.See for yourself. Here is the only contemporary painting of Alexander; the darkest thing in the painting is his hair:http://luna.cas.usf.edu/~murray/classes ... g-alex.jpg

I believe his hair was blonde. The battle scene painting of him I believe to be a realistic depiction of how his hair and body looked in the thick of battle...with the dirt, dust, and dried matted blood everywhere...remember those ancients were into realism, and their artistic skills were profound.

What battle scene painting? You mean the Pompei mosaic? But his hair is brown there, with highlight streaks. You're confusing me.John
Re: Another Movie
Wow...it is wonderful to read the reactions to ATG's physical characteristics, especially the Keltic reference (I agree with Susan). Who ever stars as Alexander in who's-ever movie must be believable, therefore, charismatic, aggressive, eloquent, mystical, athletic, intelligent AND A RED-BLOND with blue-gray eyes. Joaquin Phoenix where are you? Bleach your brunette hair and grab the script!!!! Hey, how about Orlando Bloom as Hephaistion (he played Legalas in "The Lord of the Rings")? Another round???? Love this site! Yiasou!

He'll probably start walking the streets in the real world before they ever get this movie(s) made. I wonder where he would go/what he would do...John
