Alexander the "Great"
Do you personal feel that Alexander deserves the title as the "Great"? why or why not?
Re: Alexander the
...there is no single man in world history who better deserves the title "GREAT" than Alexander III of Macedon.

No, the "greatification" of Al. was mostly a "magnificoistic" Roman concept that came centurys later. They loved his story. His dad Phillip was called a great man/general/king, but not by your average Greek, so it depends a lot on the definition of "great". Al. was short, died young, had not many kids, did not set his Macedonian Kingdom up to survive.Cyrus was called the great in his time - after his death, he was tall, died old, had many kids, he cared better for his people.now you and Melony go do your own homework

HiRead about the young Alexander, who taught him, and what formed him. Consider his achievements, and the short space of time that he took in achieving them. Look at a map, and see how far he travelled, 2,300 years ago, taking a huge army with him, and consider the logistics and challenges associated with that. Then, look at his legacies, and how he shaped the world that he left behind him - the cities, and all that went with them. Judge him by the standards of his time, and remember, great men are rarely wholly good. ATG was just over thirty years of age when he died.

As I told the other person who asked the same question: Go and do some reading on your own and you will draw your own conclusions. I first got interested in Alexander when I was 16 and he became one of my all-time heroes. He is truly one of the most magnificent men who ever lived, and one of the most fascinating. After all these centuries they are still talking about him and even making movies.
