Greek reserves

Post by alexandersdesciple »

In addition to the point about the Greeks in reserve.Alexander placed the Greeks in reserve as he never trusted them all with good reason, he basically had them along to ensure that Athens would behave themselves whilst he was away. They never did and were always plotting with the help of Demosthenese the universal mouth piece and trouble maker.Demosthenese was the regulay mouth piece who caused trouyble, and when it came on top he kept quite and ran for cover.Demosthenese cause the Thebans to rebel to the detrement of their city and when the Thebans were in trouble the cowardly Athenians left them to their fate.regards Alexes desciple

Hi Alexander's Disciple,I think you are generally correct if we are talking about the 'Allied Greek' forces, which were undoubtably suspect and therefore limited to support & garrison roles by Alexander. Although they did serve their purpose at Gaugamela. However Alexander did make increasing use of mercenary Greek forces as the years wore on, and that suggests he must have considered these to be more trustworthy (as long as they were paid). regards,Kit.

I agree also about the reserves but can't with the Demostenees. I see him another way. I red few of his speeches and I think he was a good patriot of his city-state. He just couldn't understand that Alex wasn't real threat to them. That's why he was so much against, in his mind he only defended his people. Well if he would try to disscuss it with Demades I think he could change his opinion also...Regards
