Re: Trailer for Oliver Stone's Alexander
i hope this is better than Troy. Troy had no vibe, was bland and innacurate. cheersstavros
Re: Trailer for Oliver Stone's Alexander
Hey - the trailer looks brilliant. Although I have been assured by someone that Stone will portray A and H as lovers, I don't see evidence for it in the trailer..Although Farrell is very charismatic, I am worried he will play Alexander as too "hard", and will not have the depth and complexity of character, and will just frown a lot. A's face, from the statues, is mobile, humorous, spirited...Still haven't seen Troy. Going off the idea..

Don't be put off going to see "Troy". Visually it's superb, and the action sequences are excellent.Yes, they do change the story from the commonly known one... but hey, so did Euripides, and many others, who all added their tuppence worth. In fact, the bits of the film that relate to the Iliad are pretty close to the book (tweaks for film notwithstanding). All the bestMarcus

Imagine charging on your trusted steed at a full grown war elephant with each closing gallop feeling your hart pump the blood from the end of your hands to the tip of your toes just before you both meet head on your horse rear's as so does the elephant at the same time knowing you will be at the apex of glory as you and your war horse take the ultimate plunge!
Re: Trailer for Oliver Stone's Alexander
Has Oliver Stone ever seen a Persian?! I think he has mistaken Iranians for Africans or Arabs! The Bactrian Princess Roxana looks like an Afrian who is dancing like Arabs!!!
Re: Trailer for Oliver Stone's Alexander
I believe that the actress is actually partly Puerto-Rican. I think that the Bactrians would have been much paler-skinned - particularly the nobility, and I think that the dances would have been much more dignified - I can't believe that the rulers would have wanted their daughters to be confused with dancing-girls.But, I think that the film generally looks good - there's bound to be things that we don't like, but the film isn't being made to satisfy Alexander-enthusiasts anyway. Alexander loved to make a grand show, and I think he'd be pleased with this.Susan
Re: Trailer for Oliver Stone's Alexander
One of the stills someone posted looked like a scene from Sinbad - Sinbad and the son of Ammon, maybe. Actually, Sinbad with 1950s Hollywood as a model, but raunched up a bit. It'll look brilliant, but...as I said before, Farrell looks good, but he doesn't look right, somehow. I guess any Alexander is fighting against Renault's Alexander, in my head.
Re: Trailer for Oliver Stone's Alexander
MarcusI will go, honest. It isn't so much the story being tweaked I fear, but Heat said that it ws let down by the weak story and bland characters. Now, given the source, one wouldn't think those were the problems...

Re: Trailer for Oliver Stone's Alexander
I've seen some pictures where I think Farrell looks perfect; and others where he doesn't look good at all - I suppose we'll have to look at it holistically and make our judgement then.I'm greatly looking forward to it. I'm going to put all my prejudices and expectations to one side... and at the very least I'm intending to enjoy what will undoubtedly be a visual (and visceral) feast...I can't wait!Marcus

Re: Trailer for Oliver Stone's Alexander
Even more worrying was the picture I've seen of Farrell with Angelina Jolie. In their effort to make him look like a teenager they've ended up with him looking like Jim Carrey!I can guarantee that Alexander *never* looked like that! :-)Marcus
Re: Trailer for Oliver Stone's Alexander
thats great. just great, alexander is going to look like a bonjovi type jim carey look alike wearing persian attire. is there any rap music on the sound track? hehe
A minority report...
Greetings, Cyrus,(Laughing- at my own peculiarities) I saw the clip and yes, I agree- in trying to go for an "epic", directors too often toss out cultural variances that actually matter to some people- like Alexander wearing a women's marriage necklace in one scene, the *types* of dance people do and when and *why* they do them and *who* they would actually do them in front of, the Bedouin gear on Bucephalus, etc. The Alexander audience will not be limited to a select Euro-American group... it would be nice to see a director reflect this awareness.
I do not know yet if I will go see the Alexander movie- I fear a pale copy... part of me enjoys epics and is drawn to that aspect of the movie, another part.... I will rely on reports from Pothos members before making my decision.
I am hoping they will all come back with glowing reports of a grand epic!(Laughter with a hint of sigh)I know it makes me seem "too picky" but even Troy disappointed- once you have removed the essential plot lines and character motivations, a lot of the characters seemed to be acting insanely- without the abuse of Patroclus' body and the deep relationship between Achilles and Patroclus, why was
Achilles *so* angry? Without the more involved scenes between Achilles and the Agamemnon competition, it made no real sense for Achilles, a "manly warrior", to be sulking in his tent.. Without Helen's gold (and thus its implied power/wealth), the willingness of Hector and Priam to destroy their entire kingdom for the sake of Paris being "in love" made no sense- in fact, the most interesting scene, when Hector tells Paris he has "spit on" the honor of both his father and country, was the most powerful- and then suddenly went no where..
There were parts of the movie I thoroughly enjoyed, but they were outweighed by what didn't work for me (and before I receive a dozen rebuttals, I am stating this is simply *my* view and I do not expect others to agree) Ah well- one can always hope!
Regards,
Sikander
