Just Today I saw an exellent movie called Shooter and an incident in the Movie was in my opinion very remenisent of tactics Im sure Alexander used.

The story line in Shooter was that the powers that be massacred a village through which they wanted to run an oil line. Now the story was that they massacred the villagers without asking them to move first. And the reasoning was to do this was to make it un nessesary to even ask the next village. Now this is very like Alexanders Crushing of Thebes.

Alexander could readily treated Thebes as athens and or other conquered towns cities etc. but fundamentally Thebes was not really an Alexander blood lust. but a carefuly devised warning to anyone else thinking of causing bother.

Its been many times classed as barbaric and something that he shouldnt have done. but in hindsight could we argue that thebesdestruction subsequently halted other major Greek massacres at home, If this terror tactic hadnt been used could we be sure that even bigger greek uprisings would have happened with even greater Greek massacres.

Only a thought.

Just a related point and maybe a connection to maybe why darius didnt take Alexander that serious at the beggining.

maybeon what the persians thought they knew about greeks maybe he thought Whatever. ILL Toss some Persian Gold here or there and on past form the greeks will burn them selves out at home. id say Alexander knew of this also. therefore could he realistically leave the Greek culprits un touched and open to persianbribery. I would wager that Thebes was just the tool to just make the Greeks say. hey boys the moneys good but look at the consequences.

Strategically we gotta say Thebes was a pretty nasty master stroke.
