some doubts

Post by alejandro »

Hi CompanionsI have a few questions about some Greek names. Please don't think this is a test ;), but it will be much simpler for me if I list them:
1. What is the "true" name of the country, Macedon or Macedonia? Is one the Greek name and the other the English translation? What about Babylon and Babylonia: one the city, the other the area around it?
2. What is the name of the general, Parmenio or Parmenion? Every time he's mentioned in a Greek text his name seems to be "Parmeniona" (the "o" is an omega), though I don't know whether it is because that's the right spelling or because of the meaning of the sentence (I know that in Greek, the same word will have different "versions" depending on its function within the sentence -eg, Alexandre, Alexandrou, Alexandros- though I don't know the different meanings).
3. How did the (ancient) Greeks name the rivers Nile, Indus, Tigris and Euphrates; the Aegean, Black and Mediterranean seas; and the (modern) Asia Minor?
4. How do you spell Siwah in Greek? There's no w in Greek, so I thought two possibilities are plausible: 1. sigma-iota-double upsilon-alpha; 2. sigma-iota-omega-alpha. The latter could be justified by similarity between the w and the omega, so a translator simply used the letter that (in terms of shape, not sound) more closely resembled the Greek one (though the pronunciation would be entirely different, something like see-oh-ah !).
Any help will be much appreciated.
Best wishesAlejandro

Siwah is the modern name for the area the Greeks merely knew it as the Temple of Ammon in Libya.Indus=Indos Nile =Nilos the Euphrates and the Tigris are the Greek names
When you think about, it free-choice is the only possible option.
